Prague-born singer Nykki grew up listening to all the pop princesses. Now, she’s ready to take on the stage herself, with emotionally tinged, energetic pop songs that boast undeniably catchy hooks. Her debut single “No Cry” marked her as a newcomer to watch, with Billboard praising her “saccharine, yet commanding vocals” and star potential. That said, the release of her new tune, “Lost My Mind” – an EDM-inspired synthy pop bop — offers even more proof that she is ready to leave her mark in the industry. We caught up with the rising star to discuss musical influences, favourite heartbreak hits and dream collaborations.

Was music always a big part of your life?
Absolutely! I started as a dancer but singing was always my biggest passion. When I was little, I would go to every concert in Prague because I loved watching artists on stage. There hasn’t been a day without music for me.

Growing up, what kind of songs did you listen to?
Songs like Gwen Stefani’s “What You Waiting For?”, Rihanna’s “Umbrella”, anything by Britney Spears…

Tell me a little bit about your new single ‘Lost My Mind’. What’s the story behind it?
In ‘Lost My Mind’, I talk about the emotions I experienced after a breakup. It’s a song about losing yourself; about how heartbreak can make you forget who you are and what you want. Sometimes we know that something or someone isn’t good for us, but it takes a while to break the cycle. That’s what “Lost My Mind” is about.

In a recent interview, you described yourself as the ‘biggest overthinker’. How does being an overthinker affect your creative process?
It helps me a lot, but it also makes my life much harder. Sometimes, I hate that about myself, but creatively it gives me so much to share and write music about. I am lucky to have people around me who don’t overthink things at all, though, who reassure me when I express my emotions to them.

In your opinion, what are some of the best heartbreak hits/ breakup songs out there?
Hmm, that’s a good question! Madison Beer’s new single “Selfish” really got me. “This Love” by Camila Cabello is also one of my favourites and “I Almost Do” by Taylor Swift makes me cry every time.

Do you have anyone, in particular, you dream of collaborating with?
I would love to collaborate with a DJ and write a fun club song. I’d also love to work with a rapper on a big hip hop hit. But, I can’t tell you one name. There are so many – I would feel bad naming just a few!

What’s next for you?
I cannot wait to start performing live. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a stage
